Installing Control 2 Native for Symphony I/O MkII Thunderbolt

In this article, we explain the installation process for Control 2 software, as well as updating the Symphony I/O MkII via Thunderbolt

apogee-symphony-io-mkii-thunderbolt-no-modules-rearThere are a few new steps when installing this new version of Control 2 for Symphony I/O MkII Thunderbolt users compared to the previous Control software.

If you have Dante, and just need to update your firmware, check this article instead:  Updating Symphony MkII firmware via Dante

Control 2 Native Software:

Uninstall first!

First, you'll want to run the included UN-installer. This will uninstall all Apogee software to ensure you have a clean install.

If you had the previous "Symphony Control" software installed, then please follow these important steps EXACTLY:

  1. Unplug the Thunderbolt cable between the Symphony and computer.
  2. Restart the computer
  3. When the computer is running again, open the Control 2 download and run the UNINstaller app that is inside.
  4. When Uninstall is complete, RESTART your computer again.

Do not skip the uninstall step!

If the previous Symphony Control software isn't uninstalled, in EXACTLY the way described above, it can cause conflicts with the new Control 2 which uses DEXT instead of KEXT.

Optional check: is an old Symphony driver staged on your Mac?

If you previously installed Symphony Control on this Mac, or this Mac was set up from an older Mac using Migration Assistant, a copy of the old KEXT driver may remain in a protected macOS staging area even after uninstalling. After completing the uninstall steps above, you can check:

  1. Open System Information (Applications > Utilities > System Information, or Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > System Report).
  2. In the sidebar under Software, click Extensions. The list can take a minute to load while it says "Gathering information".
  3. Look for an extension named ApogeeSymphonyIO2T.

If ApogeeSymphonyIO2T still appears in the list after uninstalling, a staged copy of the old driver is present. It can cause kernel panics or prevent the Symphony I/O MkII from being detected even after a clean Control 2 install. See the article: How to clear a staged Apogee kernel extension on Apple Silicon Macs

If ApogeeSymphonyIO2T is not listed, no staged driver is present and you can continue to installation.

Then Install:

Open the Control 2 download and run the Installer.

On the "Custom Install" screen (Installation Type step), enable the checkbox labeled "Support for Symphony I/O MkII". This checkbox must be checked or the Thunderbolt driver will not be installed.

Click Continue and proceed through the remaining prompts.

You'll be prompted for your computer password, to allow the installer to modify files, and to restart.

If a dialog appears that says "Installer Would Like to Modify Apps on your Mac", click Allow.

After you restart, you'll get a prompt that an extension needs approved.

System Extension Blocked

Click the option to Open System Settings and Approve the Apogee Extension. You'll be prompted for your computer password again. This is what installs the DEXT.

Allow Button Dext

On macOS 15 Sequoia and newer, an additional step is REQUIRED.

In System Settings, go to General > Login Items & Extensions.

Scroll down to the Driver Extensions section and click the i button on the right

Toggle the ApogeeTBTDextInstaller.app to the ON position, then click Done.

Update Symphony I/O MkII Thunderbolt Firmware:
