Symphony Studio firmware flash

If you have been instructed by Apogee support to re-flash the firmware of your Symphony Studio, this is how to do it.

Although it is unusual, sometimes the firmware in your Symphony Studio has to be re-flashed. Under normal circumstances firmware updates are a part of the Control 2 / Symphony Studio update package, and there is no need for a stand alone firmware updater application - It just runs as part of a normal update.

NOTE: This does not change the version of the firmware. It is only a means of refreshing the existing firmware should there be problems.

  • First, change the contents of the SymphonyStudioVersion.txt file on your Mac to a version number that is higher than the currently installed version of firmware.

NOTE: You cannot change the text file while it is in place. The next few steps walks you through the process.

  • From Finder use the “Go to folder” feature: ⇧ shift + ⌘ command + G and paste in
    /Library/Application Support/Apogee/Firmware
  • Drag SymphonyStudioVersion.txt to the desktop. It will NOT “move” it, it will create a copy.
  • Open the copy on your desktop. You will see the version number of the current firmware. Your version may be different, this is just an example.

  • Change the last number to a number that is at least 1 number higher and SAVE the text file. For example you would change 0.0.35 to 0.0.36 and SAVE. Your numbers may be different.

  • Back in /Library/Application Support/Apogee/Firmware, DELETE the original SymphonyStudioVersion.txt file. You will be prompted for your password.
  • Drag the copy you just altered from your desktop back into /Library/Application Support/Apogee/Firmware.
  • If you have your desktop set to be backed up to iCloud, you will see a warning asking “Are you sure you want to remove “SymphonyStudioVersion.txt” from iCloud Drive?" Click MOVE. (If you don’t have your Desktop set to be backed up to iCloud you won’t see this)

  • You will be prompted for your password.
  • Go to your Utilities Folder ⌘command + ⇧shift + U and open Activity Monitor. (/System/Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app)
  • 1-Search for Apogee in the search bar, 2-select ApogeeGlue and 3-click the Stop button.

Click on Force Quit from the prompt.

  • In just a moment after force quitting Apogee Glue, you will see the “New firmware is available” prompt. Your numbers may be different.

  • Click Update.
  • On your Mac you will see the initial progress bar for the Firmware update indicating the transferring of the file to your Symphony Studio.

  • Next you will see “Please Wait”

  • At this point the front panel of your Symphony Studio will display a progress bar. (This is the secondary progress bar, indicating the writing of the file, this time displayed on the front panel of your Symphony Studio.)

  • When this process is finished your Symphony Studio will shut itself off.
  • The firmware has been successfully re-flashed.
  • Turn the Symphony Studio back on.
  • After a moment you will AGAIN see the “New firmware is available” prompt. This is normal.

THIS CAN NOW BE IGNORED - Click Close

NOTE that from this point forward you will see the “New firmware is available” prompt every time you power cycle or hot plug your Symphony Desktop - this is normal. To remedy this or “put things back to normal”, repeat these steps:

  • Go to /Library/Application Support/Apogee/Firmware
  • Drag SymphonyStudioVersion.txt to the desktop. It will NOT “move” it, it will create a copy.
  • Open the copy on your desktop. You will see the version number that you created earlier. 0.0.xx. Change the last number BACK to what it was before you changed it.
  • So, if you changed 0.0.35 to 0.0.36 to force the flash update, you will now change it back to 0.0.35.
  • Back in /Library/Application Support/Apogee/Firmware delete the SymphonyStudioVersion.txt file.
  • You will be prompted for your password.
  • Drag the copy you just altered from your desktop back into /Library/Application Support/Apogee/Firmware.
  • If you have your desktop set to be backed up to iCloud, you will see a warning asking “Are you sure you want to remove “SymphonyStudioVersion.txt” from iCloud Drive?
  • Click MOVE. (If you don’t have your Desktop set to be backed up to iCloud you won’t see this)

  • You will be prompted for your password.
  • That completes the process. Your firmware has be refreshed.
